SSC CGL Preparation Strategy 2026: 6-Month Plan for Tier 1 & Tier 2
A complete SSC CGL preparation strategy for 2026. Syllabus, book list, section-wise tips, mock tests, and a 6-month timetable that works.
Why SSC CGL is worth it
Central government job, ₹35k-₹1L pay depending on post, JSO/Auditor/Inspector profiles, work-life balance most private jobs can't match. Clearable in 6-12 months of focused prep.
The 4 sections of Tier 1
1. Quantitative Aptitude — 25 questions 2. Reasoning — 25 questions 3. English — 25 questions 4. General Awareness — 25 questions
60 minutes total. Speed matters more than depth.
6-month timetable
- Month 1-2 — Concept clarity. RS Aggarwal (Quant), MK Pandey (Reasoning), Wren & Martin (English basics), Lucent (GK).
- Month 3-4 — Previous year questions section by section. Aim for 80% accuracy.
- Month 5 — Full-length mocks, 3 per week. Analyze mistakes for 2 hours per mock.
- Month 6 — Revision + weakest section focus.
Section-wise strategy
### Quant Master these first: percentages, ratio, average, time-speed-distance, profit-loss, mensuration. They cover 60% of the paper.
### Reasoning Practice puzzles daily. 20 minutes a day for 60 days transforms you.
### English Read one editorial per day. Learn vocabulary in context, not from lists. Grammar rules from Wren & Martin.
### General Awareness Static GK: 50%. Current affairs: 50%. Read one monthly current affairs compilation.
Tier 2 strategy
Tier 2 is heavier quant + English. If Tier 1 is a sprint, Tier 2 is a middle-distance race. Practice full-length papers weekly from month 3 onwards.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Chasing too many YouTube channels
- Skipping mock analysis
- Ignoring GK till the last month
- Not timing yourself during practice
