The balance rule

Combining like terms
Terms with the same variable and power can be added or subtracted directly: 3x + 2x = 5x, but 3x + 2 cannot be simplified further because x and the plain number are not 'like terms'.
Order of operations still applies
Simplify inside brackets first, then powers, then multiplication/division, then addition/subtraction (BODMAS/PEMDAS) — algebra doesn't change this order, it just adds variables into the same expressions.
