Cell Structure — what's inside a cell, and why each part matters

Every living thing is built from cells, and each part inside a cell (organelle) has a specific job — much like departments in a factory. Understanding what each organelle DOES, not just its name, makes cell biology far easier to retain.

The nucleus — the control center

The nucleus contains the cell's DNA and controls its activities, like a factory's head office issuing instructions. It's the largest organelle in most cells and is surrounded by its own membrane.

Mitochondria — the powerhouse

Mitochondria convert nutrients into usable energy (ATP) through respiration — this is why they're called the 'powerhouse of the cell'. Cells that need lots of energy (like muscle cells) contain more mitochondria.

Cell membrane — the gatekeeper

The cell membrane controls what enters and exits the cell, letting in nutrients and oxygen while keeping out harmful substances — it's selectively permeable, not just a solid wall.

Plant cells have extra structures

Unlike animal cells, plant cells have a rigid cell wall (for structural support), chloroplasts (for photosynthesis), and a large central vacuole (for storage and maintaining pressure) — this is the core plant-vs-animal cell difference tested in exams.

Examples

  • Muscle cells contain many mitochondria because muscles need constant energy for movement.
  • Plant cells keep their shape even without water pressure partly because of the rigid cell wall; animal cells don't have this support.
  • Red blood cells have no nucleus in mammals, freeing up space to carry more oxygen-carrying haemoglobin.

  • Saying plant cells 'don't have mitochondria' — they do; only animal cells lack chloroplasts and a cell wall, not the other way round.
