Hindi Grammar (हिंदी व्याकरण) — the basics, explained simply
Hindi grammar (व्याकरण — vyākaraṇ) has a few structural features that trip up new learners the most: grammatical gender, Subject–Object–Verb word order, and postpositions instead of prepositions. This page covers each with examples in Devanagari.
Gender (लिंग)
Every Hindi noun is either masculine (पुल्लिंग) or feminine (स्त्रीलिंग) — लड़का (boy) is masculine, लड़की (girl) is feminine, and this affects adjective and verb endings: अच्छा लड़का (good boy) but अच्छी लड़की (good girl). There is no simple rule for every word; common patterns and memorisation both help.
Sentence structure (वाक्य रचना)
Like Tamil, Hindi is Subject–Object–Verb: 'मैं किताब पढ़ता हूँ' (I book read — I read a book) puts the verb पढ़ता हूँ at the end, not after the subject as in English.
Postpositions (परसर्ग)
Hindi uses postpositions after a noun instead of prepositions before it: घर में (house-in = in the house), मेज़ पर (table-on = on the table), राम के साथ (Ram-with = with Ram). के, की, का also show possession and change form to agree with the noun's gender.
Tense and the verb होना
Present tense normally combines a main verb form with है/हैं/हूँ (a form of होना — to be): वह जाता है (he goes), वे जाते हैं (they go). Past tense usually drops this helper: वह गया (he went).
Examples
- मैं स्कूल जाता हूँ — I go to school (verb + है-form at the end)
- उसने किताब पढ़ी — She read the book (past tense, no है-helper)
- बच्चे बगीचे में खेलते हैं — The children play in the garden (postposition में = 'in')
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong gendered adjective/verb ending (अच्छा for a feminine noun instead of अच्छी).
- Placing postpositions before the noun out of English habit, instead of after it.
- Forgetting the है/हैं/हूँ helper verb in the present tense.
Try it yourself
Choose the correct form: वह ___ लड़की है। (अच्छा / अच्छी)
Show answer
अच्छी — लड़की (girl) is feminine, so the adjective must agree: वह अच्छी लड़की है।
